插图：Sections 7.5 and 7.6 will motivate an approach we will call “indirect licens-ing”, which, like direct interpretation, posits no more syntactic structure thanappears at the surface, in conformity with the Simpler Syntax Hypothesis. Itdiffers from direct interpretation in that the syntactic structure of the antecedentis relevant not only to the interpretation of the fragment but also to its syntacticwell-formedness. This helps gives rise to the appearance that the fragment itselfhas hidden syntactic structure. The core of our argument is that if machineryexists that accounts for the interpretation of a fragment of one type, withoutappealing to covert syntactic structure containing the fragment, then thatmachinery is available for all types of fragments and constitutes the defaulthypothesis. Finally, and crucially, in our approach the interpretation of the fragment orfragments does not require that the antecedent contain an identical constituent.Following a very substantial literature, we will argue that deletion underidentity is not always possible in cases of well-formed ellipsis. Rather, fragmentsare interpreted by rules that match them up with the interpretation of ante-cedents in the discourse. We pay particular attention to the evidence that hassuggested most strongly that the antecedent of the missing material is syntactic,since such evidence constitutes the main impediment to a general theory offragment interpretation.

作者：（美国）库里卡弗（Peter W.Culicover） （美国）杰克道夫（Ray Jackendoff） 合著者：胡建华Peter W.Culicover现为美国俄亥俄州立大学语言学教授，主要研究领域为句法理论、语言可学性、语言学得和语言演变的计算机模型。他的著作除本书外，还有DynamicalGrammar（Oxford University Press，2003）。SyntacticNuts：Hard Cases in Syntax（Oxford University Press.1999）等。Ray Jackendoff现任美国塔夫茨大学哲学教授，该校认知研究中心主任，主要研究自然语言的意义系统.以及它是如何同人类概念系统相关联，如何用语言表达。他的最新著作有Meaning and the Lexicon（OUP，2010），Language，Consciousness，Culture：Essays on MentalStructure等。
