    《实用英语》自1995年正式出版发行以来，它所坚持的内容的实用性、教学的针对性和编写的
科学性受到了广大使用者的热烈欢迎。广大师生把它看作我国高职高专层次英语教学的理想教材。
近年来，随着西部大开发的推进和贵州省经济文化的发展，贵州社会各行业对各层次高技能英语人
才的需求越来越大，现有的英语教材已不能很好地满足当地学习者的需要。因此，我们策划编写了
这套具有贵州特色的、符合贵州省省情的辅助阅读教材《实用英语阅读教程(贵州版)》。本套书
的编写以主教材《实用英语》为基础，是对主教材阅读内容的扩展，可作为《实用英语》和《新编
实用英语》的辅助教材。在编写过程中，我们既注意吸收和突出主教材《实用英语》中以服务为宗
旨、以就业为导向，突出实践技能培养的特色，又充分考虑到其作为辅助阅读教材在学生学习中所
起的辅助作用，根据贵州省高职高专学生的英语水平和学习条件等实际情况，严格按照高职高专教
学大纲基本要求，合理选材、编写，补充了大量新知识。同时，注重教材的科学性、知识性、针对
性、趣味性和通用性，满足不同专业学生的需求。
    《实用英语阅读教程(贵州版)》每册十个单元，每个单元包括五大板块(趣味阅读、阅读技
能、应用文一瞥、阅读自测、贵州风情)。每个单元的趣味阅读(Section 1)包含两篇文章，供学
生课前独立完成；阅读技能(Section 2)主要通过实践练习进行相关技能的训练，此部分包含两篇
文章，教师可在课堂上先向学生介绍该单元所涉及的阅读技能，再指导学生进行阅读；应用文一瞥
(section 3)可由教师指导学生阅读，使学生掌握该单元的应用文格式；阅读自测(Section 4)由
Task 1和Task 2两个任务组成组成，Task l为一篇短文，Task 2为短语配对，由学生课后独立完成；
贵州风情(section 5)为本教程的特色内容，每单元为一篇短文(内容涉及到贵州的风土人情、民族
特色、主要景点、特产和饮食)，教师可在课堂上向学生简要介绍，让学生课后阅读。该部分的特
点是可作为口语训练材料，让学生能脱口背诵。本教程阅读文章中所有生词都有注释。

Passage A
    You’ve probably already discovered that learning a foreign language isn’t just
learning new words and grammar. In order to speak fluently and properly you must
learn how to use the words and grammatical structures within the context of the
culture, otherwise you may face some embarrassing situations.
    When you learn the vocabulary, you must learn to choose proper words in certain
situations. English speakers use a lot of euphemisms, polite, less direct words for things
or .ideas that may cause embarrassment. Sometimes words with the same meanings
produce different feelings in the listeners, so you must choose words carefully in
different situations.
     Every culture has specific rules of courtesy and certain words for special occasions.
What are considered polite manners in one culture might be very rude in another.
Therefore, in learning a foreign language you are learning what is considered polite and
rude in the culture of that language. The dictionary sometimes doesn’t tell you this.
Have you noticed that North Americans like to have a lot of personal space around
them and feel very uncomfortable if they have to stand too close to others? Perhaps you
wondered why they stood so far away from you.
     Were you surprised at the way North Americans eat? Different cultures not
only have different foods, but people also eat in different ways. In the United States
and Canada, eating is a social occasion, and people like to talk while they eat. North
Americans don’t make noise or talk while they have food in their mouths. One person
chews while a second person talks, and then the second person talks while the first
person chews! Learning to do this is almost like learning a new dance step. Many
foreigners are surprised at this and at how many different foods Americans eat with
their fingers: fried chicken, spare ribs, pizza, French fries, sandwiches, corn on the cob,
fruit, etc.
