《英美文学作品选》是根据《高等学校英语专业英语教学大纲》对课程设置的要求而编写的。在编写中，编者坚持“文学史与作品选读并重，重点突出”的原则，充分考虑到我国英语专业学生的特点，以文学史为线索，从各个时期英美著名作家的作品中选择影响大、流传广、经过时间考验而脍炙人口的经典片段，引导学生从阅读原著入手，培养学生对文学作品的阅读、赏析能力，进而感受英美文学丰富的思想内涵，并在此基础上提高学生的人文素质，使学生对英美文学有一个总体的认识和把握。全书所选材料语言易懂，选材的故事情节有吸引力，作品具有一定的艺术欣赏价值和思想性可供英语专业文学课使用，也可用作大学英语研究生辅修课教材或涉外工作者、出国人员以及有一定英语基础且对英美文学感兴趣读者的文学读物。本书共二十五单元，内容涉及小说、诗歌、戏剧等，每单元由作者介绍、作品介绍、原著选读、注释四部分构成。
